Forestry as an alternative land use, is a valuable source of income to landowners and plays an important role in combating climate change. The forest industry, comprising growing, harvesting and processing of forest products makes a significant and growing contribution to the Irish economy. The important contribution of forestry is reflected in the commitment relating to the sector which the government has outlined in the renewed programme for government. It targets an annual 10000 ha planting program in the coming years and aims to achieve 17% forest cover by 2030 which is the target set in the 1996 strategy growing for the future. However, to achieve this target within the time scale outlined would require an annual afforestation program of over 20000 hectares.
